What an incredible opportunity for young people and for early childhood services in Queensland! The QLD government is now offering fee free traineeships and apprenticeships for people aged Under 21. It is a great start for anyone under 21 who wishes to commence an early childhood career without the financial burden of fees.  It is also a chance for experienced educators to mentor students to be our future educators. Services can also benefit by employing a trainee or apprentice to be an extra pair of hands on the floor and receive financial incentives. ECTARC can commence training for your trainee or apprentice at any time of the year.

The funding is part of the Queensland Government’s Skills for Queensland strategy.

Traineeship and Apprenticeship programs are an excellent way for someone to commence an early childhood career. The Australian government also provides financial incentives to services to assist with the cost of employing a trainee/apprentice. All ECTARC traineeship and apprenticeship programs can be commenced at any time of the year.

Training is provided by flexible delivery. This means training will be delivered in a mode that best meets the individuals needs and includes a combination of face-to-face one-one-one training sessions, webinar training and/or group training sessions. Self paced study is required by the student to support learning and complete assessment tasks.

At ECTARC we pride ourselves on the high level of support we provide to our trainees and apprentices. Our trainees and apprentices receive:

  • Support and assessment visits at their service,

  • Guarantee of a Training and Development Officer to speak to at all times during business hours, Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm and Tuesday nights until 7pm,

  • Email access to their personal Training and Development Officer and

  • 24/7 online training and student portals (providing supplementary resources, a Trainer messaging service, facility to upload assessments, assessment results etc).

      Directors, Nominated Supervisors and/or employers are supported and regularly updated throughout the traineeship/apprenticeship on the progress of their trainee/apprentice.

      All ECTARC trainees and apprentices are encouraged to read the QLD Traineeship/Apprenticeship Information Handbook prior to commencement and refer to it throughout their studies.

      Steps to taking on a new trainee or apprentice

      • Owners/Directors contact their local Australian Apprenticeship Support Network (AASN) provider - Find your local provider at to discuss the requirements of taking on a trainee or apprentice and information on the financial incentives available.

      • Visit the DESBT web site: for further information on traineeships and apprenticeships.

      • Owners/Directors employ a trainee/apprentice.

      • An ECTARC Training and Development Officer conducts a sign up with the trainee/apprentice and develops a training plan.

      • Training takes place both on and off the job. Trainees/Apprentices are issued with learning materials that provide them with all the information they require for self study. Employers give trainees/apprentices time off the floor each week to complete learning materials. A qualified child care worker from the service takes on the role as the trainee/apprentice's Workplace Supervisor. The Workplace Supervisor provides support and advice to the trainee/apprentice throughout the program.

      • ECTARC provides support to the trainee/apprentice and employer through regular visits to the centre for training throughout the traineeship/apprenticeship and via regular telephone communications.

      User Choice Contract

      The Department of Employment, Small Business and Training supports traineeships and apprenticeships under the Further Education and Training Act 2014. The Department is committed to improving education and care for children by assisting people to gain recognised qualifications, through the provision of the User Choice program.

      The User Choice program requires the parties to contact an Australian Apprenticeship Support Network (AASN) provider to facilitate the signing of a training contract. The State government pays Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) for training, with a nominal fee for training charged to the trainee/apprentice.  An Australian traineeship or apprenticeship consists of a combination of training and paid employment, either under the National Training Wage or a workplace agreement. The Queensland User Choice program enables apprentices, trainees and their employers to select a preferred Registered Training Organisation (RTO) from a list of Pre-qualified Suppliers for the delivery of accredited training to meet their specific needs.

      The User Choice program also reflects the Department’s priority for supporting the creation of genuine new job opportunities, and for allowing young people the opportunity to more easily make the transition from school to work.       Access to the ECTARC Training Portal after completion

      All students will have 14 days access to the ECTARC Training Portal after their course completion date to download content and any completed assessments for future reference. To download completed assessments, go to the relevant unit and click on the ASSIGNMENTS link to view your assessment tasks. Click on the assessment task you wish to copy and then right click on your mouse and choose the PRINT function. Change the destination from your printer to the PDF setting and click SAVE.       Please note: If you have previously completed HLTAID004 Provide an emergency first aid response in an education and care setting as part of a program that has been funded by the Queensland Government, and need to update this throughout your enrolment period, this unit will not be eligible for funding.  This means you will be required to pay the costs associated with this training directly to the external training provider as per their fees and charges.
